What they are

Financial assistance programs provide free or reduced-cost care to patients who cannot afford to pay. Nonprofit hospitals are required to have these programs under IRS rules as a condition of their tax-exempt status.

Who qualifies

Eligibility is typically based on income relative to the Federal Poverty Level. Many hospitals provide full assistance below 200% FPL, and sliding-scale discounts up to 400% or higher. Some hospitals don't publish thresholds — you have to ask.

How to apply

  1. Contact the billing department and ask about financial assistance or charity care
  2. Request an application form
  3. Gather documentation: tax returns, pay stubs, bank statements
  4. Submit before paying — retroactive applications sometimes accepted
Ask before you payOnce you pay or agree to a payment plan, it may be harder to access financial assistance. Apply first.
