What an EOB is
An EOB is a document your insurer sends after processing a claim. It is not a bill — it shows what was covered, adjusted, and what portion remains your responsibility.
Key sections
Amount billed — the provider's listed price (starting point, not what you owe).
Discount or adjustment — the contractual discount your insurer negotiated.
Allowed amount — the maximum your insurer agrees to pay for this service.
Plan paid — what your insurer actually paid to the provider.
Your responsibility — what you owe. Compare this with your hospital bill.
EOB says one thing, bill says another?Contact the billing department and ask them to reconcile. Do not simply pay the higher figure.
