What a hospital bill actually is
A hospital bill is a document sent by a hospital asking you to pay for services. It shows the total charges — but this is rarely what you will actually pay. Most insured patients pay a fraction of the billed amount after insurer negotiation and adjustments.
Summary bill vs itemized bill
Most hospitals first send a summary bill — a single total with limited detail. You have the right to request an itemized bill, which lists every charge line by line. You cannot verify charges without it.
What to check before paying
- Request an itemized bill if you only have a summary
- Compare the bill with your EOB — do the amounts match?
- Check that insurance payments have been correctly applied
- Look for duplicate charges or services you don't recognize
