List price vs what you actually owe
Hospitals have a published price list (Chargemaster) with prices much higher than what insured patients pay. Insurers negotiate discounted rates — the difference is written off. If you have insurance, you should not be paying list prices.
Common reasons a bill looks higher than expected
- Deductible not met — you pay more of the bill directly
- Out-of-network provider — even at an in-network facility
- Facility fees — separate from physician fees, even for outpatient visits
- Multiple separate bills — hospital, anesthesiologist, radiologist, surgeon all bill separately
- Billing errors — duplicate charges, wrong codes, services not received
⚠ Do not pay the list priceIf your bill doesn't show insurance adjustments and you have coverage, do not pay until your insurer has processed the claim and issued an EOB.
