What an itemized bill shows

An itemized bill breaks down every charge by line item — service date, description, billing code, quantity, and charge. It is the only document that lets you verify whether charges reflect what actually happened during your visit.

Why you need it

Summary bills show a total but not the detail. Studies consistently find that a significant proportion of medical bills contain errors — duplicate charges, incorrect codes, charges for services not received. These errors are only visible on an itemized bill.

You have the right to an itemized billHospitals are required to provide one upon request, at no cost.

How to request one

  1. Contact the hospital billing department by phone or in writing
  2. State you are requesting an itemized bill for your visit
  3. Provide your name, date of service, and account number
  4. Ask for it by mail or email — keep a copy
